“We got to know this venue when we passed through Alte on a walk for the first time on our holidays, and we were immediately enchanted. So when we started looking for a place to get married, we immediately remembered this place. The venue is beautiful, due to the combination of nature and rustic, which gives a mystical aura to the place. The heat is not too intense outside because of the all the shades from the trees, and the river that runs through it (literally in the middle, and it is so beautiful) also helps to cool off. Everything was well organised and if I had to point out a single most memorable moment, it would be the perfect layout and decoration of the outdoor dining tables! The dance floor was in an interior medieval-style room, very spacious that at the same time did not bother anyone who wanted to stay in the cocktail and dinner area. On our day, the weather was good, but in case of rain, the venue has facilities that allow everything to happen inside, without losing sight of nature. We couldn’t recommend it more.”

Legal Requirements for a Wedding in Portugal
Portugal is a popular destination for foreign couples wishing to marry abroad, thanks to its straightforward legal process and no residency requirement. However, paperwork preparation is essential to ensure your marriage is legally recognised.
Residency
There is no minimum residency requirement to get legally married in Portugal. Foreign couples can arrive shortly before the ceremony, making it a flexible and accessible option for destination weddings.
Civil Weddings
A civil ceremony in Portugal must be performed by a Portuguese registrar (Conservador do Registo Civil) at a civil registry office or an approved location such as a wedding venue.
Ceremonies are conducted in Portuguese, however depending on the town where you are getting married they can be conducted in English or French. You are required to have a translator present if either of the couple does not speak the language.
Religious Weddings
A Catholic wedding in Portugal can be legally binding, but only if it is formally registered with the civil authorities in advance and all required documentation is properly submitted. This process can take several months, so early planning is essential. It also involves additional steps compared to a standard civil ceremony.
- The Catholic Church must notify the civil registry in advance that a legally binding religious ceremony is planned
- You must submit all required civil and religious documents to the local Conservatória do Registo Civil (Civil Registry Office) before the wedding date.
The process typically requires:
- Baptism and confirmation certificates for both partners
- Proof of premarital counseling or a marriage preparation course
- Written permission from your home parish
- Approval from the local Portuguese diocese
- Coordination with the Portuguese Civil Registry Office to ensure all legal requirements are met
Once all documents are approved, the Catholic Church will forward the marriage details to the civil registry, officially registering the marriage as legally valid under Portuguese law.
Note: Protestant, Jewish, and other religious ceremonies can be performed but are typically symbolic unless followed by a civil marriage.

“I’m a professional photographer from a hot town with a Mediterranean climate and I’ve seen a lot of sweaty grooms. Also, I’m one of those guys who sweats quite a bit (I guess my body likes keeping cool so I think I have large enough of a sample to comment with some weight. There are two basic approaches to handling hot weather successfully if you are prone to sweating. One is to dress in naturally cooling materials, forget some of the formalities and just take it easy, to minimise sweating. Second is to dress in layers (undershirt, dress shirt, waistcoat, suit) which will contain sweating so that it doesn’t show (except on groom’s face, of course). Except for regular wiping off the sweat, which might make the photographer’s job a bit more difficult, there is one additional drawback. I’ve had a groom faint in the middle of the ceremony from heat stroke. Luckily many of the guests were doctors, so after some hydration he was able to continue. The worst possible thing you can do is a compromise of these two (like dress shirt and just a waist coat) because they will stimulate sweating without concealing it adequately (like wet shirt under the armpits)”…Read More.
