“We got to know this venue when we passed through Alte on a walk for the first time on our holidays, and we were immediately enchanted. So when we started looking for a place to get married, we immediately remembered this place. The venue is beautiful, due to the combination of nature and rustic, which gives a mystical aura to the place. The heat is not too intense outside because of the all the shades from the trees, and the river that runs through it (literally in the middle, and it is so beautiful) also helps to cool off. Everything was well organised and if I had to point out a single most memorable moment, it would be the perfect layout and decoration of the outdoor dining tables! The dance floor was in an interior medieval-style room, very spacious that at the same time did not bother anyone who wanted to stay in the cocktail and dinner area. On our day, the weather was good, but in case of rain, the venue has facilities that allow everything to happen inside, without losing sight of nature. We couldn’t recommend it more.”

Legal Requirements for a Wedding in Portugal
Portugal is a popular destination for foreign couples wishing to marry abroad, thanks to its straightforward legal process and no residency requirement. However, paperwork preparation is essential to ensure your marriage is legally recognised.
Residency
There is no minimum residency requirement to get legally married in Portugal. Foreign couples can arrive shortly before the ceremony, making it a flexible and accessible option for destination weddings.
Civil Weddings
A civil ceremony in Portugal must be performed by a Portuguese registrar (Conservador do Registo Civil) at a civil registry office or an approved location such as a wedding venue.
Ceremonies are conducted in Portuguese, however depending on the town where you are getting married they can be conducted in English or French. You are required to have a translator present if either of the couple does not speak the language.
Religious Weddings
A Catholic wedding in Portugal can be legally binding, but only if it is formally registered with the civil authorities in advance and all required documentation is properly submitted. This process can take several months, so early planning is essential. It also involves additional steps compared to a standard civil ceremony.
- The Catholic Church must notify the civil registry in advance that a legally binding religious ceremony is planned
- You must submit all required civil and religious documents to the local Conservatória do Registo Civil (Civil Registry Office) before the wedding date.
The process typically requires:
- Baptism and confirmation certificates for both partners
- Proof of premarital counseling or a marriage preparation course
- Written permission from your home parish
- Approval from the local Portuguese diocese
- Coordination with the Portuguese Civil Registry Office to ensure all legal requirements are met
Once all documents are approved, the Catholic Church will forward the marriage details to the civil registry, officially registering the marriage as legally valid under Portuguese law.
Note: Protestant, Jewish, and other religious ceremonies can be performed but are typically symbolic unless followed by a civil marriage.
Symbolic Ceremonies
Many couples opt to handle the legal paperwork in their home country, then celebrate with a symbolic wedding in Portugal. This allows for complete freedom in venue, format, and personalisation, with no legal constraints.
Required Documents
To ensure your marriage is legally recognised, you must submit key documents to the local registry office (Conservatória do Registo Civil). These typically include:
- Valid passports or national ID cards
- Full birth certificates (issued within six months of the wedding date)
- Certificate of No Impediment or an affidavit confirming marital status
- Divorce or death certificates if previously married
- Translations of all documents into Portuguese, certified and apostilled
Regional & National Differences
Legal requirements can vary slightly depending on your nationality and the specific region in Portugal where the wedding will take place. It’s essential to verify the exact documentation required based on your circumstances.
Timing & Paperwork
Documents should be submitted to the Conservatória do Registo Civil several weeks before the wedding. Allow at least 3–6 months to complete all necessary steps, especially if documents require translation or authentication.
Same-Sex Marriage
Same sex marriage has been legal in Portugal since 2010. The legal process for same sex and opposite sex couples is identical.
Local Support is Key
Because legal requirements can vary based on nationality and region, working with a local wedding planner is highly recommended. They will assist with translations, registry appointments, and ensuring all legalities are met on time.

“Dream Weddings doesn’t begin to describe it. From the first meeting with Claudia, we knew we were in good hands. She was a unique mix of being all about business, but still making us feel special. There was countless back-and-forth via email and phone in the 18 months of planning for this big day. Oh boy did she deliver. Claudia and her team were amazing. The venue looked incredible, her staff were attentive and helpful. I’m not exactly sure when she sleeps as we would receive responses to our emails so quickly, despite the time difference. My new wife and I could not be happier with how everything went. Claudia took our vision, and made it a reality. I guess dreams really can come true! The only reason that I wouldn’t recommend this team, is that I wouldn’t want anyone else’s wedding to be as amazing as mine! Thank you to the whole team for all of the amazing work and tireless effort you put into making this day so special for us, and everyone who was there.”

“When thinking about weddings it is automatic, especially for brides, to think of all the details associated with it, from decoration, to flowers and – of course – to which photographer to choose. The latter is undoubtedly the most important, because it will be the person who will record the best moments of this special day and also will allow us to remember and relive every moment of it whenever we wish. When I chose Ana Pastoria Photography to document our wedding, it was not because I heard about her work but through a quick search and I immediately fell in love with her work – it seemed that she conveyed the feeling she experienced in each photograph she saw. It was love at first sight, love that grew with every photoshoot, every moment shared. I loved all the work she’s done so far – I’m in love with all the photos. And besides the excellent work, it is so easy being photographed by Ana! Everything is natural and real, everything flows. All of this to definitely recommend Ana Pastoria Photography and to say our thanks for everything.”

Our Tips for a Seamless Wedding Experience
Planning a wedding in Portugal can be a smooth, exciting, and stress free experience, especially with a little forward planning and local support. Here are our top tips to help you make the most of your wedding abroad:
1. Consider the Weather
Portugal enjoys a Mediterranean climate, but summers can be hot, particularly in the Algarve or inland regions. Plan your ceremony for late afternoon or early evening to avoid the midday heat and make the most of the golden hour for photos.
2. Hire Local Professionals
Engage with local wedding planners and vendors who are familiar with the region ensures you’re working with experts who understand the legal requirements. Trusted local suppliers can save you time, money and stress.
3. Photographers & Videographers
Portugal is home to some exceptionally talented wedding photographers and videographers. To secure your preferred team, it’s best to book 9–12 months in advance, especially if you’re marrying in high season.
4. Visit Your Venue Before Booking
A site visit isn’t mandatory, but if you can make a trip beforehand, it’s the best way to visualise your day, meet your planner or suppliers in person, and iron out the finer details.
5. Book Early
Portugal is a top destination for weddings, especially in the Algarve, Sintra, and Lisbon coast. Reserve your venue 12–18 months ahead to get your first choice and avoid peak season availability issues.
6. Making it Legal
While Portugal allows legal weddings for foreign couples, many opt to complete the legal formalities at home and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony in Portugal, which offers more flexibility with timing, language and location.
7. Plan Pre & Post-Wedding Events
Turn your wedding into a weekend (or week!) experience. Plan a welcome dinner, beach day, wine tasting, or post-wedding brunch to give guests time to relax and celebrate with you beyond the big day.
8. Budget Considerations
For better value, consider midweek weddings, shoulder season dates (spring or autumn), or venues outside major tourist zones. Portugal offers great value, but booking smart can stretch your budget even further.
9. Keep Your Guests Informed

Expert Advice for Planning a Wedding in Portugal
We’ve gathered insights from top wedding planners and suppliers across Portugal to help you prepare:
“The Algarve offers so much beauty, amazing weather, perfect sunsets, beautiful sandy beaches, breath taking clifftop views, but most of all it offers rich traditions, welcomes all visitors with open arms and has a generous heart. Celebrating your wedding abroad in Portugal is an experience of a lifetime in so many ways.” – Algarve Dream Weddings
“Bring mosquito plugs, repellent, calamine lotion, Aloe Vera gel and anti histamine tablets to use between you and your Wedding Party. Be safe rather than sorry. Bites are like cuts to the skin. Exposed areas: the face, neck, arms, back and feet can be almost impossible to cover with makeup. A bad reaction (swelling, weeping) on the day can be tragic for looking gorgeous on the day.” – The Hair, Nail & Tan Studio
“An engagement shoot is not always something the people really look forward too – however, I believe it is essential to make each couple feel more at ease in front of a camera, and connected with the photographer. This helps the couple relax on the wedding day and the photographer gets a better sense of who they are and how they act together and will then certainly get better and more honest images at the main event.” – Ana Pastoria Photography
“Cascais and the Algarve are favourites for wedding couples due to the fantastic weather all year round, perfect for that cliff top wedding ceremony overlooking the ocean. With magical castles, rural farmhouses and elegant hotels all tastes are catered for across Portugal and the level of service and attention to detail shown by venue owners makes you feel right at home.” – Amulet Weddings

“I’m a professional photographer from a hot town with a Mediterranean climate and I’ve seen a lot of sweaty grooms. Also, I’m one of those guys who sweats quite a bit (I guess my body likes keeping cool so I think I have large enough of a sample to comment with some weight. There are two basic approaches to handling hot weather successfully if you are prone to sweating. One is to dress in naturally cooling materials, forget some of the formalities and just take it easy, to minimise sweating. Second is to dress in layers (undershirt, dress shirt, waistcoat, suit) which will contain sweating so that it doesn’t show (except on groom’s face, of course). Except for regular wiping off the sweat, which might make the photographer’s job a bit more difficult, there is one additional drawback. I’ve had a groom faint in the middle of the ceremony from heat stroke. Luckily many of the guests were doctors, so after some hydration he was able to continue. The worst possible thing you can do is a compromise of these two (like dress shirt and just a waist coat) because they will stimulate sweating without concealing it adequately (like wet shirt under the armpits)”…Read More.
