Real experience: Louise & Matt
“Croatia had always held a special place in our hearts, so when it came to choosing where to get married abroad, it felt like the natural choice. We decided to plan the wedding ourselves, and despite going it alone, we pulled off a celebration that was not only truly unique and meaningful, but also incredibly budget friendly. What mattered most to us was time with our loved ones. I’m Irish, Matt is from the UK, and we didn’t want our wedding day to fly by in a blur. That’s why we made it a full experience by combining the wedding with a holiday. It gave us a chance to relax and really enjoy being surrounded by our closest family members, including both of our 90 year old grandmothers, which made the day even more special. Saving money wasn’t the goal, but knowing Croatia so well, we were confident we could give our guests an even better experience there than we could have in the UK, for around the same cost. We actually covered flights and accommodation for all our guests, and in the end, everything came in under budget. Our biggest tip – The biggest challenge was the paperwork and legalities. If I was doing it all over again I would get someone to help me with this – I can’t stress enough.”

Weather & Best Time of Year to Marry in Croatia
Croatia’s climate varies slightly between coastal and inland areas but overall features a Mediterranean climate ideal for outdoor weddings.
Best Months
May to September offer long, warm, and mostly dry days, perfect for outdoor ceremonies on beaches, terraces, or vineyards.
- May and June: Mild and comfortable temperatures with blooming nature, ideal for garden and countryside weddings.
- July and August: Hotter and busier due to the tourist season, but evening weddings can be magical by the sea with cooler temperatures and stunning sunsets.
- September: Often considered the best month—still warm but less crowded and fewer bugs.
Off-Season Weddings
October and April can also work for smaller or indoor weddings, with cooler temperatures and a more intimate atmosphere. Coastal areas are milder during these months, though rain is possible.
Winter Weddings
November to March are ideal for cosy indoor celebrations in historic venues or urban settings like Zagreb.

Here’s a breakdown of the top regions and what makes them special, plus insights into which areas are more budget conscious for couples planning their destination wedding in Croatia.
Dalmatian Coast & Islands
This region boasts some of the most iconic wedding venues in Croatia, from seaside fortresses and centuries old churches to elegant cliffside hotels and private island estates. Whether you’re envisioning a grand affair in a historic palace or an intimate ceremony on a remote beach, the Dalmatian coast offers a wealth of breathtaking options to suit various wedding styles.
Dubrovnik
Known as the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” Dubrovnik is famous for its stunning medieval walls, baroque churches, and luxury hotels with breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea. It’s perfect for couples seeking a dramatic, historic backdrop with plenty of upscale venues. Expect higher prices here, especially in peak season, due to its popularity.
Split
A vibrant city centered around the UNESCO listed Diocletian’s Palace, Split blends ancient Roman architecture with lively waterfront venues and buzzing nightlife. It offers a more affordable alternative to Dubrovnik, with excellent options for mid range weddings.
Hvar & Brač Islands
These islands are favorites for exclusive island weddings. With crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches, and fields of lavender, they provide a dreamy setting. High-end resorts and private villas make this area perfect for luxury weddings, though costs can be on the higher side.
Cavtat
Just south of Dubrovnik, Cavtat is a picturesque coastal town known for its relaxed atmosphere, elegant waterfront promenades, and historic villas. It’s a charming alternative to Dubrovnik’s bustle, often offering more affordable venue options while maintaining luxury standards.
Zadar
A historic city with Roman and Venetian influences, Zadar boasts unique attractions like the Sea Organ and Sun Salutation. It has a good mix of historic venues and modern spaces. Zadar is often more affordable than Dubrovnik or Hvar, making it a great option for couples seeking a blend of culture and budget friendliness.
Šibenik & Kornati
More off the beaten path compared to Dubrovnik or Split, Šibenik and the nearby Kornati islands offer rugged natural beauty and peaceful surroundings. This region can be more budget friendly, with charming venues that balance nature and culture.
Istria Peninsula
Often referred to as the “Tuscany of Croatia,” Istria is renowned for its rolling hills, truffle forests, and charming medieval hilltop towns. It’s an ideal choice for couples looking for rustic elegance, excellent wine, and culinary delights. The region offers a variety of enchanting venues, from stone villas and countryside estates to boutique wineries and hilltop castles, making it perfect for a romantic and stylish celebration.
Rovinj
One of the most romantic towns in Croatia, Rovinj features cobbled streets, pastel-colored buildings, and a picturesque old harbor. It’s a popular wedding destination with a variety of venues from boutique hotels to intimate waterfront spaces. Pricing here is moderate but can vary depending on venue exclusivity.
Poreč
Known for its UNESCO listed Euphrasian Basilica and lively coastal vibe, Poreč offers beautiful beaches and affordable wedding venues. It’s a budget friendlier choice within Istria, ideal for couples who want coastal charm without the higher prices of Rovinj.
Motovun & Grožnjan
These hilltop towns are perfect for couples seeking authentic countryside settings rich in culture and history. They’re known for rustic venues, vineyards, and a slower pace, often at very reasonable prices compared to coastal hotspots.
Continental Croatia & Inland Regions
For couples seeking a more relaxed, authentic atmosphere, inland Croatia offers an abundance of charming venues including vineyard estates, country manors, and traditional farmsteads. These regions are especially appealing for couples wanting a unique setting away from the typical tourist routes, with more flexibility in pricing and availability.
Zagreb
Croatia’s bustling capital offers sophisticated urban wedding venues ranging from elegant historic buildings to contemporary spaces. It’s perfect for city weddings with access to fine dining and cultural experiences. Zagreb tends to be more affordable than coastal luxury hotspots but offers plenty of high-end options too.
Plitvice Lakes & Nature Parks
For nature lovers, this region offers breathtaking scenery with waterfalls, forests, and lakes. Ideal for intimate, scenic weddings away from the crowds. Venues near the park are often mid range to affordable, depending on the location and season.
Slavonia
Famous for its folk traditions, hearty cuisine, and warm hospitality, Slavonia is an excellent choice for couples seeking a truly authentic Croatian cultural experience. Weddings here tend to be more budget-friendly, with charming rustic venues and lively traditional music.

“We couldn’t be happier with our decision to elope in Croatia. The entire experience was everything we dreamed of, intimate, romantic, and completely stress free. From start to finish, Dreamtime Events took care of every detail with exceptional care and professionalism. Despite planning from the other side of the world, communication was always smooth, timely, and reassuring. Our special day began at the Brown Beach House, a stunning luxury boutique hotel just steps from the historic town of Trogir. From there, we boarded a private speedboat to Split, where we enjoyed a relaxed walk through the city’s charming streets. The ceremony took place in the breathtaking Park Marjan, surrounded by nature and panoramic views of the Adriatic, the perfect setting to exchange our vows. To end the day, we were whisked away in a vintage Chevrolet back to Brown Beach House, where we shared our first romantic dinner as a married couple. Every moment felt magical, personal, and perfectly us. We’re so grateful to the Dreamtime Events team for making it all happen, a truly unforgettable start to our new chapter together.”

“Three pieces of advice we would give to other brides planning their wedding in Dubrovnik are:
1. Visit Dubrovnik before you get married. We saw venues online and had more or less chosen the one we wanted. But when we went to see it, we didn’t like it at all and ended up choosing a venue we hadn’t even considered.
2. Food tasting – don’t be afraid to ask the hotel to change the menu up a bit to suit the needs of your family and friends/culture. Our hotel was amazing for this and nothing was too much trouble.
3. Most importantly – get a wedding planner! We would not have been able to do all the paperwork and planning ourselves. We thought it was going to be soo difficult organising everything but Matea just made every detail and every decision so easy for us. We couldn’t recommend Dubrovnik Event enough!”

Expert Advice for Planning a Wedding in Croatia
We’ve gathered insights from top wedding planners and vendors across Croatia to help you prepare:
“Pick vendors who will invest time to get to know you and become your friends through that process! This is especially important with photographers and wedding organisers. Each couple is different, and so should be their approach to you! It’s the best way to make sure they will go above and beyond when needed and that you both will come away happy and fulfilled by this cooperation” – Matija Kljunak Photography
“One of the perks of having a destination wedding is the holiday that comes along with it. More often than not you and your guests will stay a minimum of a few days! With that in mind we would suggest that you have your wedding in Croatia on a weekday rather than on a weekend. Your choice of venues and vendors will be much more readily available on a weekday. Also know that many vendors offer weekday discounts on their services.” – Dreamtime Events Wedding Planner
“Did you know that Croatia has 2715 sunny hours during the year? That makes it one of the sunniest country’s in the world. The sunniest city in Croatia is the City of Hvar, doesn’t that make Croatia the most amazing choice for your wedding day and honeymoon. Open air weddings are a dream, but always be sure there is a backup plan in case of rain.” – Something Blue Wedding Planner
“Mediterranean countries like Croatia are very laid back and slow. It is important to keep in mind that sometimes it takes dozen follow ups and weeks to get responses from suppliers (especially if you start planning in summer – middle of wedding season). Starting with your wedding planning with plenty time ahead will save you from stress and headache. Plus you get to negotiate better deals and save more money for fun bits.” – Wed Our Way Wedding Planner
“Did you know that by having your wedding abroad you can actually save money whilst having a special experience with your closest friends and family in the picture perfect city of Dubrovnik? Another good reason to consider Dubrovnik as your wedding destination is that by Croatian law you only need to visit the registrar a couple of days prior to your wedding. So there is no set residence period making it easier for you to plan your visit and your wedding too!” – Dubrovnik Event Wedding Planner
Real experience: C & J
“When we decided to have a micro wedding in Dubrovnik, Croatia, we knew we wanted it to feel more like an experience than just a single day. With just 14 of our closest friends and family, we were able to create something truly intimate, personal, and memorable. We put together a detailed wedding website to help our guests make the most of their trip. It included everything from travel tips and accommodation suggestions to places to eat, things to do in Dubrovnik. It was really important to us that our guests felt informed, relaxed, and excited to join us. Our wedding absolutely wouldn’t have happened without a wedding planner. Having someone based in Croatia who knew the local suppliers and spoke the language was essential. She was worth her weight in gold. Everything ran smoothly, and we were able to actually enjoy the day, stress free. We also recommend doing a pre wedding visit if you’ve never been to your chosen destination. Visiting Dubrovnik beforehand helped us feel more confident, allowed us to meet our planner in person, and even led us to change our original reception venue which turned out to be an amazing decision.”
