Why Couples Choose Italy for a Destination Wedding

Whether you want a civil ceremony, a religious service in a centuries-old church, or a symbolic vow exchange overlooking the sea, Italy has it all.

But how much do weddings in Italy cost? We would love to say that it costs X to get married in Italy, but defining the cost is difficult as it depends on so many variable factors. The good news? With smart planning, Italy can cater to most budgets, from modest elopements to opulent affairs.

Budget-Saving Strategies for Weddings in Italy

If you’re planning a wedding in Italy and want to keep your budget under control, these tips will help you save money without compromising on your dream day.

For more ideas, head over to our Top 20 Money Saving Tips for a Wedding in Italy.

  • Book in off‑peak & shoulder seasons (Mar–May & Sep–Oct): These months typically have lower rates and  lighter tourist flow.
  • Choose Less Touristy Areas: Umbria, Le Marche, Abruzzo offer equally stunning backdrops at lower prices.
  • Mid‑week Weddings: Venues may offer discount non‑Saturday events.
  • Bundle Services: Look for venues with catering in-house for reduced vendor coordination. Musicians that play at both the ceremony and reception.
  • Local Vendors: Hire local planners and suppliers to save on travel & VAT inclusion.
  • Limit Guest List: Every extra guest adds €150–€300. Intimate weddings can feel just as magical.
  • DIY Decor and Alcohol: Bring your own wine or create simple table centerpieces.
  • Avoid Exotic Blooms: Choose seasonal Italian flowers or olive branches to cut floral costs .
  • Book Early and Negotiate Smartly: If book a year in advance you will have the ability to negotiate prices with vendors and suppliers. If you book later your negotiation power will not be as strong—some venues shave off 10 %.
  • Confirm VAT (“IVA incluso”): Italian invoices often exclude 20 % VAT — ask upfront.
  • Hire a Planner Early: A good planner can save more than their fee, especially if they negotiate discounts and avoid costly mistakes.

Planning Advice & Hidden Costs

Legal vs Symbolic Ceremonies

  • Civil Ceremony: Requires registry fees (~€400–€800+), translations, and paperwork
  • Symbolic Ceremony: More flexible, often less expensive, held anywhere without legal binding—ideal paired with a registry ceremony at home.

Venue Accommodation & Minimum Spend

  • Exclusive Use Wedding Venues: Many require bookings (2–3 nights) or a minimum spend.
  • Guest Transportation: Provide shuttle for guests if rural venues are remote.

Backup for Weather

  • Plan B: Outdoor venues often lack indoor space—budget for marquee or backup €3,000–€7,000

Music Licensing (SIAE)

  • Licence Fee: Live music/DJs require SIAE payment, range €100–€500 depending on music policy .

VAT (IVA) & Currency

  • VAT Inclusion: Default VAT is 22% and may not be included in quotes. Ask vendors up front.
  • Currency Exchange: Budget for currency fluctuations if paying in EUR vs your home currency. We recommend using a company like WISE.

Tipping & Supplier Meals

  • Etiquette: Tipping not mandatory in Italy, but appreciated. Make sure you include meals for your wedding planner, photographer, videographer etc. in your final budget.

Wedding Abroad Insurance

  • Get Covered: Essential protection in case of cancellations, vendor failure, illness, or travel issues.

Hot Tip : Practical Advice

In response to a question posted in the Weddings Abroad Guide Community (our closed Facebook Group) about cost of weddings in Italy one wedding planner offered some very logical and sound advice.

“Someone’s vision of their wedding day will differ vastly from the next person’s. I’m not sure I think it’s the best to start measuring your budget against how someone else has spent theirs, or how much money they allocated to their wedding. You need to consider what the most important things are for you. Is it the ceremony itself or the celebrations and reception afterwards? This can dictate how your budget is spent. How long do you want your celebrations to go on for? If you plan on having a ceremony late morning and then wish to party all the way through to the evening then there will be things to consider, i.e. feeding your guests twice. If you would like to treat the guests you have invited to your wedding with something special so that they will remember their experience then this will also dictate how and where your budget is spent.”

Q. Can I have a legal wedding and a symbolic ceremony in Italy?
